YAY! I have lost a total of 5kg since I started detoxing on 1st January! The weight is not water loss, it is definitely fat – I have a fancy scale that breaks it all down showing you overall weight, percentage of body fat, percentage of water, bone mass, muscle mass.
I’m 20 days into my (gentle) detox and things are going relatively well. A couple of days ago I was getting really dizzy in the afternoons (between 3 and 6) and I started wondering if I’m eating enough or if it’s a healing crisis of sorts. The odd thing is that I have LESS appetite now than before, so I have to remind myself to eat! So, I have my super huge juice – 15 mandarines / 5 oranges / a mixture in the morning, (sometimes) a fruit mid morning and then a big mixed salad with sprouts and avo at lunchtime (around 1-ish). Then I start teaching around 3 or 4 and that’s when I start getting as little dizzy. I noticed the days I do an apple juice around 3-ish I don´t have that problem, so I need to eat fruit around 3pm.
Last night I made a brown rice risotto with asparagus, mushrooms and spinach. I love this dish BUT an hour or so after dinner I noticed reddness on the upper and lower lip lines. I know from face reading that the upper lip relates to the stomach and the lower lip the intestines. So- I’m definitely intolerant to something in there and I can only think of 2 possible causes – mushrooms and / or Nutritional yeast. So, the next time I make this dish I’ll forgo the nutritional yeast and see if I get the same sign of intolerance. Obviously NOT a good detox ingredient either.
I have finally remembered to take my temperature every morning for 4 days in a row. According to Dr Morse a normal reading is between 36,6ºC – 36,8ºC (97,8-98,2º) Dr Morse believes that when your basal temperature is below 36,6, it demonstrates various degrees of hypothyrodiism and when above 36,8, hyperthyroidism
14/01 = 35,5º
15/01 = 36,1º
16/01 = 35,8º
17/01 = 35,8º
So my temperature ranges between 95,9 and 97ºF, indicating a degree of hypothyroidism.
UPDATE: 2 March 2015: Had blood test done to check thyroid – it all came back OK. Not that that means much.
I’ve been feeling FABULOUS on my detox even though I’m not feeling all that great today.
My tummy was a little unsettled today, felt somewhat nauseas, I’m really cold and a bit achy (in odd places, like the back of my left knee and lower back). I’ve got loads of tiny spots coming out on my chest and a round red patch on the back of my left hand (about 1cm). This seems to be about as much of a healing crisis as I’ve had so far.
On the upside – I have loads more energy in general and can skip my siestas, am feeling positive and focussed and have lost weight (I think it’s about 3kgs). My appetite seems to have reduced quite a bit too. Yesterday we popped into Nana to get some things and I walked past the organic, dark choc stand without blinking (or buying anything).
I tried oil pulling for the first time this afternoon. I used a teaspoon of coconut oil. The oil taste isn´t too bad, I had thought it would make me gag, but not really. Now, using olive oil would probably make me, so I’ll stick to coconut oil. I oil pulled for 20 minutes. I’m not sure I can handle doing this every day, so I’ll try twice a week and take it from there.
I did remember to take my basal temp this mornming before getting out of bed – 35,5º. Yesterday I forgot, but the day before was 36º. I need to do this at least 3 days in a row. Hopefully I’ll remember tomorrow.
What I ate today:
- water and lemon juice while exercising
- fresh orange juice for breakfast (3 oranges)
- Large salad for lunch; spinach, celery, radishes, cherry tomatoes, baby greens, fresh parsely, sprouted mung beans, pumpkin seeds – a dash or organic apply cider vinegar and home pressed olive oil.
- 2 x bananas
- brown rice with gently stirfried: asparagus, red cabbage and mung beans
- maybe a pear later on?
- loads of water and rooibos tea
Today was low on fruit and higher on veggies, and I can honestly say I feel the difference. I have a lot more energy eating more fruit. Tomorrow – 2 fruit meals and 1 veg.
I’ve been watching Dan McDonald’s (the Life Regenerator) videos on YouTube for a while now. And while I really enjoy his videos, his latest is something else. Open, honest and real. Loved it!
A great article on natural remedies for cystitis;
I´ve come to the end of week 1 and am pleased with how things are going so far. I haven´t suffered from withdrawl symptoms, which I thought I would, then again I wasn´t overindulging in the things I’ve now eliminated. I have a bit of a headache today, but I think that’s due to how I slept. I added a little soy sauce to my stirfry last night and didn´t need to the loo at all during the night (water retention?), so I literally didn´t move the entire night, which I’ve discovered is not good for me. I get better quality sleep if I get up at night and change positions.
So, where I am right now;
- much more energetic (I haven´t been having my daily siesta)
- my leg muscles feel stronger
- less appetite, not counting calories at all – just eating when I’m hungry, as much as I want
- lost 2,6 kg (around 5lbs)
- more positive
- besides eating 100% vegan, also completely avoiding; coffee, tea, alcohol, bread, pasta, all wheat products and sucrose
- small pimples on chest (a good sign)
I’ve got into a morning routine: gentle exercise when I wake (currently only 11 minutes on bike – this is going to increase every week by 1 minute), while sipping lemon water, then dry-skin brushing and shower. Breakfast: fresh fruit juice. Mid morning I find a sunny spot to sit in and relax with a bit of meditation. Routines are important for me. They keep me centred.
Plan for week 2;
- cut the soy sauce altogether (it’s acidic-forming anyway and not good for detoxing)
- watch the salt (reduce amount)
- juice apples every day. Yes, cleaning the darn machine is a schlepp, but the GI detox tabs work much better with it.
- try 1 day with fruit only – juicing and whole fruit. Perhaps Saturday?
- continue with Detox 2 tabs until Sunday
- continue with Magic Tea – 1 or 2 cups a day
- avoid almonds until week 3
I’m on day 5 of the detox and feeling remarkably good. I have A LOT more energy and have been skipping my afternoon siestas. My appetite seems to have diminished somewhat, my body feels stronger and my face doesn´t look as bloated as usual.
I’ve established a routine; exercising as soon as I wake up, sipping water with lemon, then dry skin-brushing, showering and having breakfast. Mid-morning (when possible) I find a sunny spot to sit in and meditate for about 10 minutes.
My menu plan is really simple; mostly fruit for breakfast, salad with seeds & fresh sprouts for lunch and lightly cooked veg at night, sometimes with an alkaline grain like quinoa or millet. Tonight I’m making s imple veggie soup. I’ve been drinking my ‘magic’ tea, rooibos and water and snacking on fruit I love the simplicity of it all.
What’s interesting is that I’ve discovered what looks like an intolerance to almonds. At first we thought it was the GI detox capsules that were too strong. On day 1 and day 3 I had a smoothie that included almonds (which had been soaked) for breakfast and my tummy was REALLY unsettled a couple hours afterwards on both days. Since I stopped eating almonds, I’ve had no problems – so I reckon it must be an intolerance. Just to be sure I’ll experiment again in a week or so.
It’s now 3pm, I had 2 huge glasses of fresh orange juice for breakfast, some green tea when we went shopping and a banana around 2 pm and I’m actually NOT hungry, although I will have a little salad now. I need to get about 1500 calories a day (trying to lose weight) which is still A LOT of fruit and veg. No chance of going hungry! Tonight I’ll be making a simple veggie soup supper and then we’re off to the movies!
I’ve decided to leave Facebook for a while. The world, I’ve been told, won´t stop. Between all the pages and groups I follow, the pages and groups I run and all the notifications from all the animal activism groups I belong to, it’s just getting REALLY overwhelming.
So that’s it – Facebook, has been rendered into the realm of bread, wheat, coffee, alchohol, sugar and vegan junk food, while I detox my mind and look within instead of outside myself.
